Bonding: A Symbolic Stool that Challenges Social Alienation

A Unique Two-Person Seat Designed by Loukas Chondros

Bonding is an atypical two-person seat that goes beyond its functional purpose. Designed by Loukas Chondros, this stool aims to provoke discussions and challenge societal norms. Its unique feature lies in its conditional functionality, requiring the collaboration of two individuals to maintain balance and stability. In a world where individualism often prevails, Bonding serves as a reminder of the importance of human connection and collaboration.

The design of Bonding is characterized by its simplicity and symbolism. It consists of two identical seats that converge towards each other, held together by a bond. The seats are made from 7mm thick steel sheets, bent to shape, allowing for easy and cost-effective manufacturing. The metal parts are coated in two different colors through an electrostatic process, adding visual interest to the design. The connection between the seats is achieved through six discrete, milled screws arranged in a triangular configuration. To ensure stability and prevent damage to floors, the edges that touch the ground are coated with silicone.

Technical specifications were carefully considered during the design process. Through static study simulations, the functionality of the stool was tested. Applying a force equivalent to 150 kilos of mass, the maximum displacement at the edge of the seat was found to be less than 1.5 centimeters, well within acceptable limits. The maximum stress created was also significantly lower than the yield point of the materials used. The dimensions of the stool are 970 mm x 300 mm x 430 mm, with a total mass of approximately 30 kilos.

Bonding challenges the notion of individualism and encourages collaboration. Its design requires users to seek out a partner in order to use the stool effectively. Attempting to use Bonding alone results in an imbalanced weight distribution, causing the stool to collapse. By promoting collaboration, the stool serves as a social catalyst, fostering connections and interactions between individuals.

The design of Bonding also considers practicality. The individual pieces can be stacked, allowing for easy transportation and assembly at the installation site. This feature enhances the versatility and accessibility of the stool.

Designed over a two-month period, Bonding originated from a collaboration between Loukas Chondros and Ioannis Kanellopoulos, with locations in Athens, Greece, and Copenhagen, Denmark. The project aimed to make a social statement about human alienation through Critical Design principles. While functionality was a crucial aspect, the designers also sought to provoke new ideas and challenge conventional norms.

Bonding has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Bonding's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world have earned it this accolade.
